First day in the studio
This project was made during one of the first days working in the studio. Working in such a controlled environment for the first time felt very impressive, and it marked an introduction to studio lighting and equipment.
During this assignment, we experimented with light, shadow, and contrast, focusing on short and broad lighting. Short lighting illuminates the side of the face turned away from the camera, while broad lighting does the opposite. At first, I found these concepts confusing, but through practice I gradually began to understand how they influence the appearance of a portrait.
The two portraits shown here were selected because of how they relate to each other. I was interested in the subtle sense of movement that emerges when viewing them together. After this first lesson in the studio, I also started to look differently at other photographers’ portraits, paying more attention to framing, lighting, and positioning. This has helped me more to understand how technical choices contribute to the overall image
