Larry Sultan

My work

This was a technical assignment in which we had to create our own interpretation of a photograph, inspired by the work of photographer Larry Sultan.

I studied Sultan’s images and then created my own version. In my approach, I focused primarily on the types of objects shown and the mood his photograph evokes—in this case, a sense of mystery. In hindsight, I realize I could have paid more attention to contrast and tonal values, rather than focusing mainly on the subject. Contrast can also help with creating a sense of mystery.

The project shows my attempt to approach and reinterpret an existing photograph, and what I learned about using contrast in an image.
