Martha Rosler

Martha Rosler is an American artist known for her politically engaged work in which she combines photography, text, and collage. In House Beautiful: Bringing the War Home, she places images of domestic interiors from lifestyle magazines alongside scenes of war, creating a disorienting contrast between comfort and violence. By bringing these different realities together within a single image, she reveals how distant conflicts are often disconnected from everyday life—as if they do not exist, even though they very much do.

What draws me to her work is the way she manipulates images to shift meaning and confront the viewer. The collages feel both familiar and unsettling, making visible what is usually kept separate. Her work makes me reflect on how habits shape our perception of reality and how images have the power to influence and transform that perception.
