Melanie Bonajo
Furniture Bondage is a photographic series in which Bonajo combines the female body with everyday household objects such as chairs, cleaning products, and furniture. The images show women becoming physically entangled with these objects, causing body and domestic environment to merge into a single form.
In this project, the relationship between the human body and the domestic environment is made visible in a confrontational way. The objects are no longer neutral utensils, but appear to exert control over the bodies and postures of the women depicted. As a result, an image emerges in which care, labour, and restriction are closely intertwined.
At the same time, I also read a critical layer in the work regarding the way female bodies are often associated with care, domestic work, and objects. What I find powerful is how Bonajo approaches this heavy theme in a direct and visually striking way, making the images both unsettling and intriguing.
